OJ excelled in football, basketball, track & field, and baseball while attending Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio. McDuffie was voted A-AA Ohio Player of the Year in his senior year in 1987. McDuffie scored 136 points (21 touchdowns) in high school football in 1987, surpassing future NFL players Desmond Howard and Robert Smith.
He later attended Pennsylvania State University and played football for coach Joe Paterno’s Penn State Nittany Lions. McDuffie played for the Nittany Lions at position 24. He established numerous single-season and career-receiving marks, as well as all-purpose yardage records.
