Dan was selected fourth overall by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1979 NFL draft. He was a member of the team until 1990. Dan first agreed to terms with the club on a four-year, $470,000 contract that included a $60,000 signing bonus. Dan was also a four-time Pro Bowler in 1980, 1982, 1984, and 1985. He got the George S. Halas Courage Award in 1991 and was named First-Team All-Pro in 1984.
In addition, he was a four-time second-team All-Pro in 1982, 1985-1986, and 1988. In 1987, he lined up as a nose tackle for the 46 defense before being shifted back as a defensive lineman by Mike Ditka. Dan left the Bears at the end of the 1990 season.
